On the morning of December 27th, a call came in from a school in Modiin to a child who collapsed during a sport lesson.
Guy Alon, his classmate, started performing CPR and used a life-saving defibrillator, until the patient’s heart started beating again, and he became fully conscious! He was then evacuated to Sheba Tel Hashomer Hospital by an MDA Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU).
“As we running during our sports lesson,” said Guy, “I saw that there was some sort of commotion a few meters ahead of me. I ran there immediately and saw my classmate lying on the ground, unconscious. I checked him like we learnt on the MDA course, and realized that he had no pulse and wasn’t breathing. We quickly called MDA’s 101 Emergency number, and they sent a MICU, all while the EMT Dispatcher gave instructions on performing CPR.
“I knew that every second is critical, and that he needs a shock from a defibrillator. I knew that there was one available in the school, just a few dozen meters from where I was at the entrance to the sports hall. I attached the defibrillator and gave a shock. I continued performing CPR, and after a nerve-wracking minute, saw that his pulse had returned and that he was conscious again. The MICU team that arrived took over the treatment and then evacuated him while fully conscious to hospital.
The simple actions of CPR and the importance of the defibrillator are things that everyone should know. It’s the difference between life and death, and thanks to this knowledge, I saved a life today!”
