The name Naomi in Hebrew means "pleasant", and truly reflected Naomi Degany's gentle, kind, and giving nature.
Naomi, our beloved mother and grandmother, was born on July 24th, 1943, in Kibbutz Kfar Blum in Upper Galilee. At the age of 18, during her year of national service, she arrived in Kfar Aza, a fledgling kibbutz of only five years. She was trained as a nurse during her military service, due to a national shortage of nurses, and returned to Kibbutz Kfar Aza immediately afterward.
Naomi was an optimistic woman full of life, love, and joy. She was one of the founders of the medical clinic in Kibbutz Kfar Aza and served there as a dedicated nurse. Later, she dedicated over 20 years of work as a nurse at the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) at Soroka Medical Center, providing exceptional care to fragile newborns with her huge heart and a warm smile. She saw this as her calling. Upon retirement, she returned to volunteer at the medical clinic of the kibbutz, always ready to lend a helping hand.
On the morning of Shabbat, Simchat Torah, October 7th, 2023, she was alone at her home. She spoke with us on the phone, calming us down. Around 11:00 AM, all contact with her was lost, and after two long and difficult days of uncertainty and immense anxiety, we learned she was brutally murder in her home by Hamas terrorists.
As a token of our deep appreciation for the work of the emergency medical professionals, we wish to support Magen David Adom, by raising funds for Automated External Defibrillator Station (AED) , in memory of our mother and grandmother, thus continuing her legacy for saving lives.
Memory sustains man in the land of the living.
The AED station includes a defibrillator placed in a smart locker. The availability of a nearby defibrillator increases the chances of survival from 6% to 65% or more. In the event of cardiac arrest, the faster an electric shock is administered to the heart, the higher the patient's chances of survival.
Donate NOW and help us honor Naomi’s memory!
We pray for the safety of all the soldiers, and for the swift and healthy return of Gali and Ziv Berman from Kibbutz Kfar Aza, Tamir Nimrodi and all the hostages.
About Naomi:
Naomi was born and raised in Kibbutz Kfar Blum, sister Chana, Aaron, and Tami. She was the eldest daughter of Moshe and Chaya Nir, founding members of the kibbutz and among the first settlers in the Hula Valley. At the age of 18, she went to Kfar Aza for her year of national service.
In 1966, she married Israel Alterman, a founding member of Kibbutz Kfar Aza. They had four children: Anat, Yoni, Dror, and Lilach.
Her family, especially her nine grandchildren, were her world. Naomi maintained an active and healthy lifestyle, engaging in various sports, pursuing art, volunteering at the art workshop of the kibutz, and regularly participating in mandala-making classes.
Naomi was a loving, kind, sensitive, and emotional woman who lived a simple life, filled with giving, generosity and great compassion and empathy for others. May her memory be blessed.
