Avia Hezroni was murdered on the Black Sabbath of October 7, 2023 on Kibbutz Be'eri, together with his 12-year-old grandson and granddaughter Yanai and Liel, his sister Ayala, and many others.
Avia was a Magen David Adom volunteer for over 20 years. He was a senior EMT at MDA, he was one of the ambulance drivers in the city of Netivot and he provided medical assistance at the Be'eri sector. Avia was a generous man whose priorities were always MDA and saving lives. Many members of Kibbutz Be'eri and the entire region owe him their lives, their health, and the mental strength that they drew from him. Despite harsh family tragedies, Avia continued to volunteer at MDA for the good of the community, while helping to raise his twin grandchildren after their mother suffered paralysis at their birth and could not raise them.
His friends in the military service shared the following with us:
We met Avia 50 years ago during the November 1972 cycle (184th Battalion, 14th Brigade) of our military service,. Together we fought in the harsh and bloody battles of the Yom Kippur War at the Chinese Farm sector of the Suez Canal. During the battles, Avia played a crucial part in the treatment and evacuation of the wounded and the casualties. This experience was what made him decide to choose the field of medicine and help save lives. During the war, Avia also devoted himself whole-heartedly to organizing activities for the beloved members of his battalion. Among other things, he initiated a mass blood donation.
We, the soldiers of the battalion, have decided to commemorate Avia by raising funds for a mobile intensive care unit in his memory. The unit will serve and benefit the residents of the area where he volunteered and worked for decades. This is how we chose to express our love and appreciation for Avia, and to continue his legacy and contribution to the community.
Help us by donating in his memory!

Meir Elmaliach, manager of Netivot Station MDA and a close friend of Aviya: “I have known Aviya for about 30 years and I can’t believe I am talking about him in the past tense. He is a very, very close friend. He accompanied us for many years, he is a special person, he was the father of the station in the kibbutz. An amazing man, an amazing grandfather, an admired man who carried people on him, very smart, professional and all he did was giving. I saw a lot of people who loved MDA, I didn’t see any who loved MDA as much as he did, and probably I won’t see either.”
MDA Director General Eli Bin eulogized Aviya Hezroni: “Aviya was a giving man who contributed a lot to Magen David Adom, his work at the Netivot station and Kibbutz Be’eri will be remembered for many years. MDA employees and volunteers bow their heads and mourn this great loss. May his memory be blessed.”
